From: "Mark Guzdial" To: Subject: [Aaccd] Interest in workshops on multimedia CS1 and CS2? Date: Tuesday, February 08, 2005 3:01 PM At the meeting last week at Georgia Perimeter (thanks for hosting us, Julia!), a couple people asked about the possibility of creating workshops for College faculty on the new approaches to teaching CS that we're developing at GT. You may have heard about the workshops that we're running for high school teachers, to help them in teaching CS and especially, CS AP. (http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt) We could teach something similar but at a higher level, about the new courses and materials we've been developing: - "Introduction to Media Computation" -- a CS1 in Python using media as a context. (http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/cs1315) - The same Media Computation approach, but in Java -- this is what we've been using in the high school teachers workshops (http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/mediaComp-plan/101) - "Representations of Structure and Behavior" -- CS2 content (e.g., lists, trees, stacks, queues) in a media context in Java. (http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/cs1316) There are schools adopting these courses and materials without workshops (see http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/mediaComp-teach), but it might be easier with an introduction to the materials and libraries we've created. We would have to charge for these workshops (for facilities, instructor time, breaks, etc.), unless we could get the Board of Regents to pay for them. (Okay, you can stop laughing now...:-) It used to be that NSF would pay for setting up programs like these, but it's pretty hard to get that kind of funding these days. IF YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN A WORKSHOP: Could you please respond to me with answers to these questions? - How many attendees might be interested from your campus? - Would you prefer to have a workshop at your campus (or a regional location), or come to Georgia Tech? The advantage of the latter is that we might also be able to arrange some research talks from some of the faculty here in the College of Computing, if that would be interesting. - Would you prefer a summer two-to-four day workshop during the week, or a weekend (maybe just Saturday, or Friday to Sunday) workshop? - What topics would be of most interest to you? If there's enough interest, based on responses, we'll get back to the list with our workshop plans. Best wishes, Mark __________ Mark Guzdial : Georgia Tech : College of Computing/GVU Atlanta, GA 30332-0280 Collaborative Software Lab, http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/csl http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~mark.guzdial/ _______________________________________________ Aaccd mailing list Aaccd@euler.gcsu.edu http://euler.gcsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/aaccd
